Nordsjovegen-2022-176h

Friday morning was sunny again, but the wind was still very light. According to the forecast it was about to pick up around noon and I used the time for a little excursion to the west-facing part of the peninsula. Close to Nordberg fort – another German WWII bunker complex – there are some viking stone carvings on a couple of rocks.

The ships carved into the stones give some hint on the more than 5,000 years of human history in the area and the small site is nicely situated a little bit above the beautiful west-facing coastline. It is just a five minutes’ walk from the parking at the gravel road leading down to the sea. But it is also only good for a ten minutes’ stay as after this you´ve seen it all. So, I decided to walk up the inland hill to have a look at Nordberg Fort.

The bunkers and barracks up there are well preserved and give another insight on German WWII madness, but for me the real value of visiting this place was the view on the entire west coast of the peninsula stretching from the Lista to the Varnes lighthouse. From up here it looked as if the west wind had picked up and it was time to return to Borshavn.
