Borshavn

At the southwestern tip of the Lista peninsula, close to the Lista point with is lighthouse, a bay and some offshore islands have been connected by a breakwater to form a large semi-natural harbour. At the western end of this bay lies the original, much smaller harbour Borshavn, or Vestbygd. It is surrounded by some older – for the area typical - wooden buildings, and nowadays an increasing number of modern buildings, mainly used for holiday purposes. The old harbour nowadays hosts small boats, mostly for recreational fishing purpose, while the remaining fishing fleet has moved to the new harbour a bit further east.

The main purpose of the town now is hosting holiday makers with the majority of these coming to fish out in the adjacent archipelagos with rented or own boats. You can even book packages consisting of a holiday house plus boat and equipment for fishing, something very popular with north Germans. Probably due to the holiday purpose of the town it hosts a fairly large supermarket down at the harbour. Aside from a larger camping site at the small airport further inland, the harbour area at the Havne Kiosk (harbour kiosk) in Borshavn is an official and quite well-equipped camper van site. Toilets and showers are open year-round and well heated and there are plenty of power access points for camping cars. The daily fee to use this is reasonably prized, but can only be paid via VIPPS app, a sort of Norwegian PayPal, that unfortunately only can be used by Norwegians.

The eastern bay within the breakwater, the Tjørvebukta is quite large and westerly winds blow here almost unhindered. Thanks to the protection by the breakwater, open sea swells do not make it into the bay and the waters inside stay flat even during storms. This makes it the perfect basin for beginner windsurfers / kite surfers / wing-foilers or for experienced folks looking for a freestyle playground or just a nice cruise. The downside of the breakwater is, that it makes the already tricky but iconic point west of it a semi-dangerous playground, particularly for windsurfers.

Borshavn nevertheless is the perfect basecamp for exploring the many outdoor activities riches of the peninsula. The bay is also home base of the Surf Lista surf camp, which offers courses in the area (and is led by one of the best Norwegian surfers).
