At sunset I felt extremely hungry and headed to Ars and into a restaurant at the harbor that I knew from previous stays. Reasonable prized – for Ile de Ré standards - excellent food. I had a burger and a few beers and went to bed early. The swell forecast for tomorrow was excellent with about 3 feet at up to 16 seconds. The wind should blow southeast but get pretty strong later in the day. I wanted to be at the beach early.

I stopped the engine and hastily walked to the dunes edge.

What I saw here surpassed all my expectations. Head-high waves were rolling in with bigger sets on a regular basis, bruised into shape by a medium offshore wind. On offer were – from left to right – a barely makeable fast shorebreak tube, a very good sized A-frame and, at the other reef, a tricky righthander that connected to another shorebreak tube. Bingo!
