But I had seen enough now, and it was time to move somewhere else in search of more user-friendly waves. The reef over there handled the swell much better, as Dutch expat Martin ten Hoeve demonstrated right after my arrival on a fast and long right. The lefts looked good too, a bit shorter and less juicy but very ripable.
Inside the bay a surprisingly good wave was braking too, on set waves peaking far out and – fairly slow but continuously – rolling for a long distance. Bigger boards were dominating the lineup here, as they were at the reef with a handful of SUP-surfers, a few more longboarders and two or three guys on shortboards.
Volume fetishism was – inadvertently – pushed to the max by local SUP-hero Casper Steinfath. He came to the beach with his race-SUP for a training session only to find himself surfing that tanker in head-high waves on some crazy trajectories. Not everyone´s idea of having fun but quite spectacular to watch.
Also not everyone´s concept of having fun were the odd massive set waves catching everyone out of position and unloading very serious amounts of energy. But the resulting pounding was a price worth paying for the pleasure rides this extraordinary swell was enabling.
