So, I called it a day in the late afternoon and drove back south to get back home to Hamburg. Without any hope, I made a last stop at Hvide Sande.

This was back in the days before they built the large and long jetties that now build the outside basin. “Sydmolen” (southern jetty) had prevented us with numerous good sessions in the early years but wasn´t properly working in late summer of 2008.

So, as I walked from the parking across the coastal dune my expectations were very low. I just wanted to have a last look at the North Sea before spending a couple of hours on the road to get back to landlocked Hamburg.

When I reached the beach, I saw that the pipes were pumping a sand and water mixture on the beach. They were cleaning the harbour entrance from sand and the birds loved it.

They were flocking in wild hoards around the pipe exit as with the sand and water there gets a lot of small animals swallowed onto the beach surface. Animals that normally are hidden in the sand and therefor harder to find as prey. It was a feast for the birds.
