Ross Clarke-Jones is someone who doesn´t waste too much time in considering what might get wrong. So, it was no surprise he was one of the first to be seen going right on a wave breaking at the southern peak. The hair-rising line he drew on that ride nevertheless was a reckless move. It still was a ride on razor´s edge and he barely avoided disaster. But he miraculously made it to the shoulder.

Surfing the southern peak was close to borderline, which didn´t mean that the northern peak was easy. Maya Gabeira had some mean rides here, which she completed with just barely avoiding getting swallowed by the end section.

That said, she also rode one of the biggest waves of the day, taking of from a safer position on the shoulder, but nevertheless finding herself in a critical position soon after, and this time losing the race with the end section. But due to the very well-prepared and alert rescue teams without any damage (she had different outcomes in the years before).

Axi Muniain also had a remarkable ride on that “safer” northern peak, on a massive left-hand bomb with a juicy lip which came quite close to swallow him.
