So, despite all the media hype about XXL waves and the cohorts of cameramen and photographers, this ride – which might have been THE ride – went more or less undocumented. Hugo – who is a real waterman out of passion – took this “failure” easy and was happy with having ridden this thing alone and a few of his closest friends having witnessed it from the channel.

The last tow teams returned to the safe harbour soon after this ride and the spectacle was reduced to the Atlantic Ocean vs The Canyon. Sorry, “reduced” is the wrong description. What this 6 meters @ 20 seconds swell created TOGETHER with the canyon was a mind-boggling display of the powers of nature and a Zen-like experience even – or maybe because – the spectator’s safe distance from up on the cliff.

Many spectators had already left with sunset, but a large group of people couldn´t break away from the show. The peak of the swell had arrived with sunset and now, during the last light of the day, enormous sets were rolling in. They seemed to move in slow motion, and it took a felt eternity from the moment the waves started to feel the reef until they finally dissolved in an Armageddon of white water.
