In social media and real-life surf related websites the nervous whispering of the past days had reached close to hysteric excitement. This looked like a truly exceptional swell. Maybe even a once in a decade event. But would it even be surf-able? Paddle surfing the infamous Nazaré peaks was unthinkable, but even tow-surfing this swell could proof impossible. I was quite excited too and was up with the first sound of my alarm the next morning (something I only manage very occasionally).

After a quick coffee I walked down to the lighthouse in the first pre-dawn light. The wind was a light offshore and the swell was a little bit bigger than three days ago but far from epic yet (?). Down at the lighthouse a few other people were already watching the waves from the small platform on top of the cliff and underneath the fortress.

The view from there is magnificent and intimidating at the same time as the waves of the southern peak break right in front of you and right underneath you runs the maelstrom of the white water rushing into the cliffs and north to the beach. When Nazaré is really on, this turns into a dreaded death zone you absolutely have to avoid.
