But that easy part of the walk was soon over and the path became a steep and rough ascent again. The prospect of more strenuous workout made most other hikers stay at the lake, so on my further climb I was only accompanied by some jackdaws. The reward for this additional effort was – besides the solitude – an even better panorama and – a little bit further up - another glacial lake.

After a final rock wall – and some searching for the best route to climb it - I reached the Lac de Capitellu on 1930 meters altitude. That lake was smaller but deeper, again almost circular and at one side framed by vertical rock walls. The ridges of the surrounding mountains lay just a few hundred meters above the lake and so I decided to see if I could get up to one of the summits.

I followed the at times barely visible footpath further south until it reached a short but very steep cirque. The gradient of this field of loose rubble and rocks was about 60 degrees and covered about 50 meters of altitude. Getting up through this was a last hard effort but up on the ridge the view was worth the struggle. It was an almost 360-degree overview on the surrounding mountains and valleys plus the deep blue lake underneath the ridge. I liked it a lot up there and thought that I should consider going into the mountains more often.
