Once the road reaches the Búrfell – just another volcano – and passes the huge hydropower plant the street enters a vast desert plain resembling Morocco even more. This is the beginning of the Sprengisandur, a high plain in between the glaciers Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull, and the entrance into the highlands.

The road is paved for another about 25 kilometres until it reaches another hydroelectric plant. From here on the F 26 road becomes a dirt / gravel road only suitable for off-road vehicles and runs through the wild and vast centre of the island to its north coast. Near the power station the F 208 turns off and heads in direction of Landmannalaugar. This was the route I wanted to take and despite it being already midnight I gave it a go.

Honestly, I was quite nervous tackling the dirt track that late, but I wanted to get closer to my destination and at least the three quarter moon helped a little bit to illuminate the track.
