Nowadays I – and almost every surfer living close to one of the two seas – know better and the innocent days of surfing just with a handful of friends and discovering new spots are long gone. But in these early days it was a slow process of realization and it took years to find out that there were not only surf-able waves to be found in the protection of jetties giving shelter from the wind but also classic surfing in offshore winds or glassy seas.

For the first few years my main focus stayed on windsurfing and I took surf-sessions only as additional goodie when the wind had dropped. My focus only started to shift on surfing when I had experienced - mostly in late autumn or winter - classic surf conditions with decent swells in combination with offshore winds – I called these swells ghost swells as they were still not visible on forecasts - on a more regular basis.

For a few years I almost completely abandoned windsurfing and concentrated on finding and surfing these – as it turned out quite regular – clean swells alone or with a bunch of friends. Despite our growing knowledge we were often surprised by still unexpected waves sometimes looking more like Atlantic Ocean waves than North Sea swells.
