Very much likely thanks to global warming January was unusually mild but still too chilly for me to venture out into the local seas. I did my best to stay fit and be ready for spring. End of January Brexit was dominating the news but that new virus from China increasingly demanded attention. At the beginning this was a “faraway” problem for us, and we exchanged funny videos, but it didn´t take too long until we learned better judgment.

Mid-March my daughter had the “privilege” to witness what a full lockdown meant in Spain. A little bit later we got her out of Andalusia with one of the last flights. My wife was stranded in southern France and eventually had to spend the remaining months of the sabbatical down there (it turned out that is wasn´t the worst place to be locked down). The lockdown in Germany did not affect my business – we kept drowning in work – and gave me the nice experience of cycling from office to the construction sites in almost empty streets, but also massively narrowed my options to regenerate body and mind at the local seas.
