Set waves reached easily 5 meters at hat day and the pros – girls and boys alike – put on an excellent performance in these challenging conditions (Dave Kalama won the contest). For us these conditions were above our limits and the beach was closed anyhow.
The next day the waves were smaller but instead of going surfing during the – like always - windless morning we had to organise the repair work for the damage of the previous day. Jörg had torn out the fin box of his board and my sail was seriously ripped.
During the afternoon the wind picked up and we had a wave-sailing session at Jobos with 4.5 sails in fun 2 to 3 meter waves. The weather threw in a few rain squalls and the odd rainbow and the scenery resembled a lot to the windsurfing conditions we were used from home, just with significantly warmer water and air temperatures.
Tuesday, Feb. 19th. The sail maker I had found the day before now was at home and I gave him my torn sail to get repaired. In the afternoon the wind reached medium forces and we could throw in another windsurfing session at our home-break.
Wednesday, Feb. 20th. A force 6 side-shore wind and two meter waves brought the setup for a perfect windsurfing day. We did the long downwind run from Jobos to Shacks and on the way passed turtles and flying fish. Shacks delivered fun down the line wave-sailing and ramps for nice jumps but still demanded its toll. Christian broke his board and I got a few cuts in the feet from the coral heads.
Thursday, Feb. 21st. Windy again. I was using a 4.9 and later a 4.2 sail. As the other ones were elsewhere with the car I first went out at Jobos in 1 meter waves and later sailed down to Shacks. There it had about 2 meter waves and was once again fun wave-sailing. I sailed until total exhaustion and was lucky that Jörg and Claudia passed by and gave me a ride back home to Jobos.
These downwind sails to Shacks were strenuous but exiting. Through the clear water you could see turtles so close that I was afraid I could hit them with the fin of my board. Once in a while flying fish jumped over the tip of my board. The downwind rides were fast with the solid and constant trade winds giving you already plenty of speed and the swell providing an additional kick. And at the end of the run fun wave-sailing was waiting. You just had to make sure not to ride too far down and missing Shacks.
