Just to give you an idea, the 90 kilometres drive from Calvi to Piana and the “Calanches” along the extraordinary beautiful coast takes you about 2 ½ hours without stops. Do not even thing about doing that trip for a day excursion.

Talking about the “Calanches”: this rocky landscape of reddish granite at the coast around Piana definitely is one of the must sees of the island.  The cliffs and fjords and the vegetation of the Golfe di Porto  area alone combine to fantastic sceneries. But nature has added an extra goodie with the so called “Tafoni”, a specific design that weathering has given to the rocks, resulting in manifold sculpture like rock formations of often bizarre forms. Guy de Maupassant called them “a petrified menagerie of nightmares”.  Go for a hike and visit natural sculptures named “La Tortue” (the turtle), “L'Aigle” (the eagle), “La Confession” (the confession), “L'Évêque” (the bishop) or “Le Cœur” (the heart), just to name a few. In between these natural art pieces there is plenty of stunning vistas on the “Golfe de Porto” or the “Cappu Rossu”. Together with the “Giralota” bay and the natural park “La Scandola” the “Calanches” became UNESCO world heritage in 1983.

Piana is a pretty pristine little town and a good base camp for exploring the area. The icing on the cake of the stunning landscapes of the area is the “Cappu Rossu”, to be precise that little bay to the south of this beautiful peninsula. That bay offers one of the very rare accesses to the sea of the north-west coast, together with a sand beach, a small river mouth and a westerly orientation. You get it? Yes, you can surf here.

As you already might have recognized from the previous descriptions, the island has quite a bit of mountain activities to offer. In fact it is a paradise for all kind of mountain related sports like hiking, mountain biking, climbing, skiing or paragliding.
