It is no wonder that so many people have been craving the island over such a long time. Besides strategically issues it probably is the sheer beauty of Corsica that triggers the desire. It is like everywhere: when mountains meet the sea, landscapes of extraordinary beauty are the result. And Corsica´s highest mountains reach 2.700 meters altitude – high enough to host a ski resort – while the island just stretches about 60 kilometres at its widest point. Do a bit of maths and you´ll know that this means steep mountainsides and high cliffs, especially at the north-western parts of the island.

Getting to the island by ferry already can be a mission. I once had to wait 5 hours on the ferry in sight of the harbour of Bastia until the wind backed down enough for a safe enter of the port. But due to the rough topography of the island getting around on the island is even worse, demanding a LOT of time and patience. Calculate with an average speed of barely 50 km/h when driving along the west coast or crossing through the centre from east to west coast or vice versa. In fact there are only two main roads – one along the east coast and one in the central valleys, both running from north to south – that allow halfway fluid traveling. On the coastal roads at the north-west you´ll barely reach 50 km/h due to the narrow and very curvy road.

Add to this the odd flock of goat, sheep or cows passing the road or just staying on the road to munch a bit of street-side grass plus the suicidal tendencies of local drivers you´ll understand while for most visitors driving on these roads is an issue of sweating blood and getting cramps in different body parts. But the sceneries are definitely worth this effort. Just don’t try to savour it while driving but have a stop at the rare parking possibilities along the road. Again, take your time and take plenty of time if you want to explore the island´s beauties.
