First weekend in May was a long one as the traditional “Himmelfahrt” holiday gave us 4 days off. Also called “father´s day” (at least in Germany), that thursday is traditionaly celebrated with a lot of beer and spirit and the following days are needed to recover from the also traditional hangover. But it´s also the season opener for many watermen and women, who use the break to make their first trip to denmark. Some of them combine both traditions.

As the forcasts were promising for all four days, we concentrated more ore less on the non alcoholic liquids in order to be able to dawn patrol.

Late wednesday night on the road to avoid the trafic jams. Arrived at H.S. at 3 in the morning. Sunrise check, strong winds from the north, waves seemed chaotic. Back into the van for a prolonged snooze. Up again in the very late morning. Winds onshore, raining. Started the van and headed north. Checked some spots on the road and arrived at N.V in the late afternoon. Surf was shite - it has been good in the morning, they told me - but went for a longboard session anyhow. The BIC brigade had taken their flotilla out of the hangars and the lineup was full. But they all stayed at one break so that their were still some nice waves left without having to curve around all those minimals bouncing helplessly in the lineup. next day should see better waves.

Good forcasters were right, friday afternoon the wind got much stronger and started to push in more waves. Should have gone windsurfing but stayed in N.V. to finaly test my new board in the north sea. Waves were windblown and came in short periods but the left in front of the baby jetty was working o. k. and the beacj break further up north had some sucky things to offer. Sun came out too and lessened a bit the pain from the still very cold water.

Despite the crowd of about 40 surfers in the water the feeling is still relaxed. Especialy the girls release tensions with smiles and a disarming humour. What else can You do but grin, when a venus that was floating right in Your way and spoiling Your ride claims, that she has a parking ticket. Hey ho girls, stay and show us testosterone driven males a different sort of line up etiquete. But don´t get better than us.....

That night we ran out of beer.

Saturday saw nice waves in better order and more favourable winds. The constantly growing crew of shortboarders has definitely reached ahigher level and made the best of thos lefts. The tanker flotilla had taken over the mushy A-frame. Outside sandbars created longboardwaves with some size. Everybode seemde to be pleased.
