Hoffell

For Icelandic standards this is a location of average attraction. Still, if you are in the area and wish to go for a little hike, this glacier might be a proper destination. Park your car at the parking lot close to the ring road and hike / cycle for about 3 kilometres along the gravel track through the plain to the end moraines.

From the low hills of the moraines you will have already a beautiful look on the glacier and the meltwater lagoon with the icebergs bobbing on the icy water. If you want more walk to the mountain flank at the northern side of the glacier and hike / cycle up the narrow and very rough gravel road track leading up through a narrow valley. The track is very steep and you will probably have to push your bicycle most of the time. Once the road gets less steep again and turns to the north leave it onto a path heading along the valley in a slow ascent. After a while you will reach a cliff from where you have a great view on the glacier and the surrounding mountains. This view is well worth the effort of the steep ascent.

If you are adventurous (and have prepared yourself with a good map and enough food and water) you may either continue along the path or return to the gravel track and follow it further north up in the mountains.
