Arriving in Perth felt a bit like coming home, especially with local friends taking care of us and making us feel at home in their house in Fremantle, definitely a great place to get acquainted to the climate and time difference, before we set off north, to our first Destination.
Lancelin, a nice place where I spend some time in the past, felt really empty this time, on and off the water. Maybe one reason for the lack of tourists were the costs for food and petrol. Shopping put definitely dents in our budget and showed that Australia is not a low budget destination. But taking wind and waves in the equitation you definitely get bang for the buck.
The waves during our stay weren't massive, but definitely had the right fun size to form a playground without serious consequences in case of a mistake. Sometimes I had all the waves to myself, really a strange feeling. If you add the laid-back attitude of the self-titled Ozzies, the sunshine and the feeling to stand on the edge of a massive continent in front of an endless ocean…you instantly have the song Great Southern Land by Icehouse playing in your head.
You realize instantly how big Australia really is if you check your progress on the map after hours of driving only to find you made it a tiny few centimeters.
