Margaret River with its forests was great after the dry plains of the north, and even without wind the great number of famous wineries made up for not being able to surf the infamous wavespots.
We trudged along the roads towards Esperance, with thunderstorms, flooded roads and burned landscape along the way. Only a few days before catastrophic bushfires caused a couple of deaths. Talking to locals we were surprised by their pragmatism.
According to them, it’s not nature that causes the problem, only the humans being in the way of nature. Bushfires are common in Western Australia for millions of years, sometimes they are the only way to make the dry earth futile for the re-growing plants. Unfortunately, nowadays mankind und their houses are in the way…
Even the first impression of the beaches around Esperance under a rainy and cloudy sky was breathtaking. As soon as the sun came out, you always asked yourself who pushed the color adjustments in photoshop, so surreal were the water colors and the contrasts. If you add special cute locals like you find them in Lucky Bay, you have the dream of every travel agent boosting the image of Australia.
