Två Oceaner

July is not over yet and the second winter storm of this summer month is on its way to the North Sea and Baltic Sea. I send a few last mails to the construction sites and leave the office Friday noon. I make it to the ferry before the summer holiday makers clog the Autobahn. I have to wait about an hour to get on the ferry but that´s way better than being on the road moving at snail speed. Plenty of Scandinavians waiting for the ferry too, lots of families coming back from holidays and – as I realize after a while – plenty of pregnant women. In fact, all of them seem to be pregnant. Must have been a dark winter up north….

About an hour before sunset I reach my first destination, an Ales Stenar – a ring of vertical set stones placed in the contour of a Viking ship that functions as a calendar with the sun rising and setting over the significant stones at summer and winter solstice and equinoxes, check this gallery for a few more pics – that I had visited more than a decade ago. The place is magic and I parked my van and immediately walked up the hills to reach it before sunset. On arrival I was disappointed as plenty of people were hanging around, using the place as picnic area and climbing the stones.

But when I came closer I realized an old and obviously pretty tired bird sitting quietly on one of the stones. I immediately knew that this must be some ancient Viking god having a look at one of the major ritual sites of his prime. I looked at him and he looked at me and the magic was back. I waited for the people to leave and stayed until the sun set.
