Right, take that you “take back control of British borders” enthusiasts. There was obviously not much border control back then and - guess what – it led to what you are now and what you – rightly – celebrate as English culture nowadays. O.k., there was also some ugly fighting during that adaptation period but even this is nowadays celebrated as historic heritage (visit one of these Viking events like the one in Whitby to understand what I mean).

I was particularly impressed by the hogback carving called “The Gingerbread Man” (reminds me a bit of Keith Haring). The figure very much resembles wolves devouring Odin at Ragnarok (the Viking end of the world) but does not mean that this was a pagan memorial. The blending of the Norse religion and Christianity during the time when the hogback was built, means that this figure might be the Norse equivalent of Christ. At least this was the interpretation of the archaeologists.

That church in Lythe is just a small example of the many historic gems in the area that make it worth visiting and help to cover time with bad or no surf. Another very pleasant distraction is the stunning landscape with the barren areas of the moors, the rolling green hills and the spectacular coastline.
