While waiting I listened to BBC radio again and learned another thing: obviously, the reason for elections being held at Thursdays is that they were afraid that Torrie landlords would influence voters too much at Pub Friday. Probably this is all you have to know to understand the British mentality (besides from having not succeeded at football World Cups since a while).

When I reached Whitby the hail pounding had stopped and the sun appeared. I drove to the northern end of the beach to see if the point was working. But the tide was too low so I went for a little walk up the cliffs and along the cliff edge to the north. It was utterly beautiful and I was once again struck by the abundance of potential surf setups. There is a scar (flat reef) pointing out to sea about every half a mile transforming the solid northerly swell into fairly well organised lefthanders despite the stormy side-shore wind. Just most of these reefs are not accessible from land as the unstable cliffs drop almost vertical.

I walked for quite a while before I returned to Sandsend. The tide was much higher now but the swell was too unruly to produce anything worth paddling out. I decided to cruise back south to see how THE point would handle swell and wind. I would reach it shortly before high tide which is a good time for this break.
