He was convinced, that once migration is limited, British companies would start to train locals again and would pay them better wages. In my opinion this was a bizarre way to look at this issue, but changed the topic to surfing and travelling again, as he was a very nice guy otherwise.

It just severely struck me how strange they dealt with their – clearly homemade – structural problems. I mean, it was Thatcher who killed the unions and it was a succession of ultra-liberal Labour and Tory governments who are responsible for this miserable education and training of working class people. They even could have made a law forcing employers to pay British and foreign workers the same wages (like in the majority off all the other EU countries). But they didn´t because British companies wanted the cheap and skilled workers.

But despite these different views on the British and European world we had a very nice conversation and got along very well. I wished that “Remainers” and “Leavers” in the UK would manage a discussion without constantly offending and blaming each other too. That would help a lot.
