The ruin of the abbey is the perfect place to get an overview on the town and the bay. Plus, they abbey itself is always worth a visit (check this gallery to get an idea). So, I drove up to the large parking up there and prepared to pay an expensive parking fee. But luckily there were no fees charged at this time of the year like at the other parking areas. Winter is a good time to visit Yorkshire!
It is a bit of a walk from the parking to the graveyard at the cliff edge from where you have an overview on the bay. I hurried quite a bit because despite the great attraction of the abbey site itself my main interest was in checking if there were some decent waves. Once I reached the cliff edge I knew that I wouldn´t stay long here. The whole beach was plagued by strong side-shore winds and even the sheltered part at its northern end did not look good. At least from the distance. Knowing it would take at least another half hour to get there I opted for leaving and heading back south.
Once again, the short winter daytime stressed me. I was anxious reaching my next destination in time with some light left. On the road south I had to deal with a little queue caused by a very slow advancing truck. Luckily it left the road soon. But there would still be the thread of getting stuck into Scarborough´s notorious traffic jams as I had to pass the town.
