I decided to have a look at that point that I keep watching since my first trip into this area. In fact, this point was one of the reasons I came here again. I wanted to see it at least once work properly. The setup with the cliff and the scars (flat reefs running far out into the North Sea) is perfect but it needs a solid swell and exactly the right tide to make it work. Swell was there now, the question was what the wind would do with it.
When I reached the place and parked my car it was raining pretty strong again. I managed to make the short walk over half frozen mud to the cliff edge without falling. I was pretty excited about what there would be on offer, but got disappointed. The tide was too low and the wind too side-shore. Once in a while you could sense it´s potential but all together it looked like – at least at the moment – it was all too much. Too much wind, too much swell. I left to get some coffee and cookies for breakfast.
To spare time I just stopped at a gas station that had a “Café Costa” machine and bought a medium sized cup of Cappuccino and some muffins. Back on the road I had to get through a bit of a traffic jam in Scarborough before I reached the country road heading to Whitby. Another sheltered bay was my destination.
