Thanks to my oh so smart phone I did not even have difficulties to find the Lodge. Just the road from the harbour to the street where the hostel lies was blocked by sand sacks. The town had already prepared for the expected storm surge the next day and quite a few windows at the seafront houses were already covered with steel panels. I checked into the hostel and immediately went to bed.

Friday 13th.

I got up at dawn. It had been a cold night and – as the first view out of the window revealed – the snow had finally fallen. But now it had started to rain and a strong bone-chilling wind was blowing even here at the leeward side of the peninsula. I had a quick insta-coffee and went out the have a look around. The ground was still frozen and often snow covered and the rain mixed all this to a very slippery ground. When a gust of the wind reached you at the wrong place it was difficult to stay on the feet.

A couple of hundred meters up the hill I had a first view on South Bay. Solid swell lines were visible even inside this sheltered bay. And that was not even the peak of the swell. The wind came side-offshore here but every few minutes stirred up the sea into a pot of flying water. This was a gale and it was icy cold and it didn´t make me wish to paddle out. Just out of curiosity I continued my walk up the hill to the wall of the ancient fortress to have a look at North Bay. It was the expected chaos.
