But some of the forecasters predicted the winds to be pretty light. And there was a faint hope that they would turn east earlier as expected. Still a lot of uncertainties for a 1000 km day trip. And we only could sneak out of work for one day. But in the end we decided to go. 1 foot @ 14 seconds midweek – with hopefully the majority of people having to work – was too tempting.

It was already late in the evening when we managed to leave and it was half past one in the morning when we arrived. Worn out by the work day and the long drive we slept a little bit longer and it was already 9 when we woke up.

This made us a bit hectic and we dodged breakfast on favour of a first swell check at one of the west coast spots. There was nil.

The next place we had a look at, at least had some swell (if it would have been flat here all hope would have been gone) but the wind sensitive reef did not work even close to properly. So we headed to the north shore. A flat rock shelf was our prime destination up here and the first look at the break revealed a sea that was still a bit disturbed by the wind but the expected swell lines were there.
