Tuesday we had to leave. I dropped off my wife at the airport and started the long track back home. It was sunny again and I had checked the forecasts one last time. They promised a short period of medium to almost strong Mistral winds around the Rhone delta and good ol´ Sanary was my last hope.
I prayed for no traffic jams on the motorway from Nice to Toulon and was lucky. I reached the outskirts of Sanary in the late afternoon and made the last kilometers to the beach with an elevated pulse rate. The first ocean view from the promenade revealed a good dose of whitecaps. The wind was there. I found a parking lot just I front of the windsurfing spot and went for a closer check. The wind was very onshore but had a good force five to six. Small waves were pushed at the shore. It was sunny. This was all I needed. I rigged up a 5.0, grabbed the wave board and had an unspectacular but fun session.
About an hour before sunset I was done. I once again was astonished how much fun windsurfing can be even in average conditions. Sure, the beautiful surrounding and the fact that I had been really surf / windsurf starved, helped a bit to get me excited. And knowing it would be my last chance to get wet before the long drive home lifted the joy too.
