Day 4 to 10 – Cote d´ Azur

It was about an hour drive to get to the motorway exit leading to Ventimillia. The drive on the motorway, which was again narrow and curvy and had numerous tunnels, was already pretty exciting. But the road from the motorway down the steep hills to Varazze was a challenge. Steep, narrow – luckily it was late and there was no oncoming traffic – and with curves that sharp, that I had to navigate the van forth and back a few ties to pass them. Down at the town I got lost in a labyrinth of streets and in the end couldn´t find the road to the beach I was looking for. I ended driving the road following the river at the border to far inland and finally gave up.

I returned to the motorway which, by the way, has to be entered on probably Europe´s shortest toll road – from drawing your ticket to the toll-station where you have to pay you drive about 100 meters – passed the border to France and pondered to leave it soon after for the beautiful town of Menton. But I missed the exit and stuck to plan C. I knew that there was a service station shortly before Nice that has a quiet parking lot. I went there and stayed for the night.

That night was pretty cold with temperature around zero and my infection got worse. I woke up late the next morning, forgot about the idea of trying to get a surf session and drove straight to Antibes. It was sunny and warm and the ocean was dead flat. Welcome to the Cote d´Azur.
