The drive down to Monterosso was again spectacular and offered the odd glimpse on a still active sea. I had a faint hope to find some better organized waves here but down at the harbour I was disappointed. The cape stuck too far into the sea and hindered the swell to transform into the point break waves I was speculating on.

I parked my van at the harbour in the more modern part of the village and went for a walk to the historic town. This was pretty nice but – for Italian standards – not extraordinary. But then I saw the next town – Vernazza – sitting spectacular at the steep mountain flanks in the distance with the view on the buildings regularly obscured by exploding whitewater. I decided to go for a further walk.

According to the signs it was just a 3.6 kilometre walk but I soon found out that this was much more strenuous than expected. The narrow path followed the cliffs and steep mountain flanks in a constant and VERY steep up and down. But the vistas were worth the effort. They became extremely worth the sweat when I passed the last cliff and had the first closer view on Vernazza. Now I understood why this is World Heritage.

Down at the base off a narrow and steep valley sat this picturesque town embracing a tiny bay built by a small peninsula that was sort of sheltered from the raging Mediterranean Sea by a small jetty. But nobody trusted the jetty because the small fishing boats were lined up at the market place in front of the church and harbour.
