Finisterre in Brittany probably is the area with the strongest end-of-the-world aura and the most mysterious past. Winter storms are savage here and meet a fantastic landscape full of steep cliffs, secluded bays, a myriad of islands and bizarre rock formations. The area, and often the peninsulas, are full of stone age megaliths. It is still an absolutely mystery why and for what purpose these heavy stones were set up.

As if this wouldn´t be strange enough the people of the 16th century started to build “Calvaires”, some king of outside altars carved out of granite and decorated with figurative sculptures that often seem to come right out of a nightmare. A new swell was due to kick in with local winds staying light and coming from southerly to easterly directions. I had needed a good sleep to recover from the 1.400-something kilometres drive to this remote part of France, so I got up quite a while after sunrise. After a quick coffee, I drove down to Pentrez in search of a boulangerie and for a first look at the ocean.
