Finis Terra. This is how the romans called this area. It means “end of the world” or “land´s end” and there are a couple of areas in Europe who´s names still indicate that the earth will end here. All of them have similarities, a rugged and rocky coastline, plenty of headlands, capes and bays, harsh weather is a common occurrence and they face a seemingly endless ocean with a habit of beating the coasts with apocalyptic storms.

The people who live in these end of the world places – be it in Cornwall, Galicia or Brittany – in general also have similar characters. They are quite stubborn and not too keen about being told what to do by a faraway capital and insist in speaking their own languages and keeping their own and very particular culture alive. But they are also very warm hearted and friendly.

The reason for this might be that these far-off regions were the last refuges for the Celts and the population still is mostly of Celtic origin. The harsh surroundings and severe weather that these people have to cope with might play a role too. Fact is, that all these “Finis Terra” regions still breath some mystic coming from very old religions and tales often manifested in ancient monuments with forgotten purpose.
