The sky was grey when I began the drive, but in the south a bright shining strip underneath the clouds promised some sunshine. At Brusand begins the rock wonderworld and it showed its magic even in the dull light. But soon I reached the cloudless areas and the low standing sun dipped the rocks into beautiful colours, contrasting nicely with the deep blue of the various lakes. In fact, nicely was an understatement, as not the slightest ripple disturbed the smooth surfaces of the lakes, thus turning them into a mirror and doubling the vision of the colourful fanciful rock formations.

This was a very nice way of driving, just the icy parts of the road in the shadows and the many curves hindered me to give the attention that this landscape deserved. But I knew something at least equally attractive was waiting for me and only allowed myself one short stop at a larger lake.

Then the road reached a large lake – or a fjord cutting very deep inland, you never can be absolutely sure if you are passing sweet water or saltwater in this labyrinth - and I left the main road at a roundabout just before Egersund and followed the signs to Eigerøya, a large island connected to the mainland by a bridge spanning high above the fjord.

Once on the island the road climbs up onto the top of the hill and follows the ridge west while offering a great overview on the fjord to the right and the labyrinth of rocks, bays, fjords and little islands to the west. There was not a single cloud on the sky above the North Sea and I now knew that it was the right decision to waive that surf session in the morning. Now I would have about two hours left for a walk along the western parts of the island and to the lighthouse, and this in the finest weather one can expect this time of the year.
