I reached the port just after midnight and managed to get on the last ferry to Calais. I arrived at the continent at about half past one and was told that I was now entering Europe one last time by a sign prominently placed at the menīs toilet.

Back in Europe, in Calais to be precise – I followed the motorway west in direction to Cap Gris Nez. When I passed the entrance to the Channel tunnel, again wide areas were heavily fenced off. The full ex-GDR program with barbed wire, cameras and strong light. Just the mines were missing (at least I think so). I spent the night on a motorway service – without having to pay any fees – close to the cape.

The night was chilly and when I woke up the next morning it was raining cats and dogs. I had a quick breakfast and then drove on and left the motorway soon after. After a short drive over deserted country roads I reached Wissant. The town was deserted too. After a few wrong turns in the one-way labyrinth behind the sea promenade I reached the sea. Coincidentally the torrent rain just stopped now and I could go for a look without getting soaked. The wind was a light side-off but the waves that made it that far up the channel didnīt break in any usable manner.

So I continued driving to have a look at the Cap Gris Nez. Here the wind was blowing full force and stirred up the sea.
