The stained glass itself is utterly beautiful but the fact that it was sort of a European heritage made it even more exciting.

This stood in stark contrast to the recent impressions that I got in England. And these impressions didnīt feel that good recently. On coming here, we had witnessed one of these – nowadays quarterly – floodings. This itself didnīt matter too much to us besides the resulting damage showing once again the weakness off British infrastructure. But it added to a general impression about large parts of the UK being on decline a bit too long now.

The state of the country – outside the London bubble – is maybe best summoned by the sign that almost every workman company car has on the back: “Tools will be taken out of the car for the night” (or something similar). This means: it is not worth to break into this car. Neighbourhood Watch is another common sign and some areas have turned into gated communities. Besides the fancy historic parts of the larger towns the surrounding areas are usually grey, dilapidated, often dirty and not exactly thriving. Quite a few towns do not have a declining economy; they do not have any economy at all.
