The excellent wave-sailing conditions at Moulay are no secret anymore and consequently there usually is a remarkable crowd out on the ocean with the local boys standing out showing no sign of fear when rotating into ultra high backloops over the shallow reef. Which leads us directly to the dangers of Moulay. Besides the mentioned flat, slippery and holey reef which can leave nasty impressions on your equipment, there are no further real dangers to report. The camels in the vicinity are rather uninterested in tourists and the locals are extremely nice, friendly and helpful and we always felt comfortable.

It is good to see that in contrast to the horror of radical so called islamists, Islam is not synonymous to Djihadists and atrocities. In Morocco you find – even during Ramadan – mostly relaxed Muslims and you feel safe at any time. Maybe this is a result of the close relationship of northern Morocco to Europe.

The strong presence of the police and the many street controls add to this feeling of safety. There is even a police station right at the beach in Moulay and a police man guards the waves in uniform, a gun in the holster and beach sandals at his feet.

One of these street controls stopped us on the way to Eassaouira, in the quest to score a place at one of the beach bars in time to watch the world cup final. We never found out what was the reason for the stop and what we were accused of having done wrong, because negotiations about the fee were immediately started. In the end we got away with a warning and a friendly “good luck” for the final.
