Together with a couple from Germany that I had met on the way down I walked and soon climbed deeper into the gorge. Truck-sized rocks had to be passed on the way up into the ever-narrower canyon. The vertical rock walls reached heights of up to 400 meters and at some bends the now absent waters had carved caves into the seemingly impenetrable rocks. What had looked unspectacular from the outside was quite impressive from within.
As the day was short I couldn´t make it to the upper end of the gorge and had to turn back earlier than I would have liked. But the way back was uphill and better done within daylight. I reached the pass at sunset and had some quick nutrition in my van. The hike had made me hungry like a wolf and it was sheer luck for the semi-wild pigs passing by that they arrived after I had eaten something.
Then I drove back north in the dark and down to Cala Gonone, a bay very popular with tourists during summer season. I had calculated that in a tourist magnet like this I might find at least one restaurant having open in this off-season and I was right. I had a good meal and afterwards just managed to drive outside town to a parking at a sports area where I spent the night.
