This is a canyon, according to the travel guide one of the deepest on the island. From far it looked a bit unimpressive albeit strange, as if some giant had hit the massive rock of the mountain flank with an axe. I was ready for some physical exercise anyhow, so I parked the van at the pass at the end of the long valley the road had been following for the last twentysomething kilometres.

From up here a path was leading down to the canyon, which felt a bit strange for a hike in the mountains where you usually start uphill. After some easy parts the track meandered down along ever steeper rock slopes and through a typical Mediterranean bush vegetation with the odd tree managing to hang on.

It took me a while to get down to the entrance to the gorge. Some ponds marked the transition from the gorge to the small river running along the valley heading north. Uphill into the gorge the riverbed was dry but judging from the deep nick that the river had cut into these massive rock walls there must have been times when enormous water masses had rushed down here.
