We entered the tunnel and after a couple of meters I already knew that the cave was worth the visit. The path wound itself through a labyrinth of stalactites and stalagmites until it reached a larger cave that was a real fantasy world. The bottom of the cave was filled with sea water which mirrored a composition of pillar in the most fantastic forms and a ceiling ornamented with a plastering of tiny stalactites. The whole cave resembled a cathedral out of a fairy tale.
The path continued through two massive and again fantastic ornamented pillars to a higher level of the cave where myriads of small stalactites on the ceiling formed another masterpiece of nature art. I was absolutely stunned and a bit disappointed as this was already the end of the accessible parts of the cave which meant that the visit ended much too soon. I could have spent another hour in here.
But we had to leave. I was hungry now and desperately needed a bar and some brioches. But around the cape everything was shut down, so I had to drive back to Alghero to still my hunger. I parked the van at the large beach promenade north of town and walked to the harbor where I found a place that had nice “focaccias”.
