Besides, or in addition to the Nuraghi there are a couple of obviously cultic holy wells on the island. They are a bit younger but still belong to the bronze age and were obviously connected to the Nuraghe culture. These holy wells have one main ceremonial building consisting of a staircase leading down to a chamber with a well and some additional temples.

My first stop was the Santa Cristina site which combines nuraghes with a holy well and a 12th century church surrounded by some pilgrim huts. The whole archeological site is generally very beautiful with ancient trees and the different buildings and remnants of buildings from the bronze age spread across a large area. I had been here before some years ago but back then had arrived very late and was not able to explore the whole site because it soon got dark.

Now it was around the noon of a sunny and warm day and as it was off-season I was more or less alone. Strolling through the woods to the nuraghes was once again a magic experience. The whole place was breathing history and the many centuries of its use as a religious center gave it an awe-inspiring aura.
