EP05-Post-Genoa-16hh

So, I gave up the idea of a windsurf session and returned to Mandriola. There I had a cappuccino and some sandwiches at the bar while keeping an eye at the sea. The swell had picked up a bit and the wind was weakening. I drove to Mini Capo, found hip to chest-high waves and nobody out. I grabbed my board and paddled out and had the waves for myself for a while until two other guys joined me. It was – particularly because of the lack of crowds – perfect for getting used to the wave.

After the session I walked over to the cape again and was greeted by wonderful light and the sight of excellent waves. The lineup as a bit more crowded now but it was less then ten guys. Every five to ten minutes a three-waves set appeared at the furthermost tip of the point, got bent almost 60 degrees, touched the outer reef and once it met the shallower parts of the reef further inside began to peak and started to break for a longer right and a shorter left with a tendency to close out.

Catching these waves on small boards is always a bit tricky as the peak shifts a little bit and you hace to position yourself very precise at the small take-off zone in order to actually catch the wave while not taking off too deep. It is in fact much easier to surf this wave with a longboard or a hybrid with plenty of volume as this allows you to get into the wave at a much less critical part of it.
