Sometimes you have to compromise. For family reasons I spent the first two weeks of my trip at the Cote d´Azur. This is a nice area with some very nice towns and a coastline that theoretically has huge potential.

But the orientation of the coastline from the Presqu´ ile de Giens to Cannes is either not suitable for the main swell directions and / or gets too much shelter by the islands lying in front of it. Westerly winds and especially the Mistral is blowing offshore here and particularly the coast around Saint Tropez has a micro climate that keeps the coast calm while everywhere else has storm force winds. So, there is very little opportunity for windsurfing either.

So aside from the rare days with easterly – and usually very short lived -swells or easterly winds I had very few occasions to get wet during my past trips to this area. But now it was mid-October, a time when the Med starts to get more active and I had hopes that the two weeks I would stay near Saint Tropez with the family would indeed become a compromise which means there had to be at least a couple of days with a few surf and / or windsurf sessions.
