I had dropped of the girls at the airport outside Milano and now had a good week to search and hopefully find a few surf-able waves in the region. The forecast was again predicting strong northerly winds in the Rhone delta for a few days. The northern Mediterranean would be mostly flat again and the closest regions receiving some decent waves would be Corsica and Sardinia. I had checked the different ferry companies running ships to these islands and had two options.
Option one was taking the ferry from Livorno to Bastia the next morning. Option two was a ferry from Genoa to Porto Torres on Sardinia leaving the following evening. This was despite the longer passage even the cheaper option costing me 100 E for my van and an additional 20 € for the “poltrone” (the seats where you can spend the nightly passage desperately trying to find some sleep in an upright position surrounded by way too many people snoring way too much).
Sardinia would be a sure bet with that forecast, but Corsica looked likely to get some rare brilliance too. In fact, a particular reef might get some epic conditions. I had some good days on the island last winter but did not get THE epic conditions to reveal the full potential of the rugged west facing coast. So, I had some unfinished business there plus I really liked the fantastic landscape of the island. After some hesitation I decided to take the risky route – surf wise – and booked the ferry to Bastia.
