12 January. We left. After 6 weeks almost entirely spent at the Cote d´Azur it was time to drive back home and return to work. For my taste it had been quite a few days too long at the notoriously wind- and waveless Saint Tropez area, but the whole western Med had been unusually quiet most of the time anyway. At least it had been warm – too warm for the season with day temperatures constantly reaching 15 C and more – and I had been cycling a lot. I nevertheless had stopped checking wind and swell forecasts a couple of days ago, fearing that with our departure, the sea would awake and fire again.
Again, it was mostly sunny and fairly warm and calm. The drive on the motorway was easy and we even passed Nice without any traffic jams. On the dashboard the usual engine failure warning were occasionally flashing but I had got used to ignore them as the van was still running fine. I was convinced that we would make it back home without problems. I had driven about 3.800 kilometres now with these hysteric dashboard warnings and the engine purring without any problems. The warnings surely were caused by a malfunctioning sensor or some corroded cable.
