In this vast country roads are built for the single purpose to bring you from A to B and they are built as economically as possible. When they cross glacial rivers, which are generally prone to flooding, the bridges are very simple single lane constructions often built from wood. In case they get swept away – and they will get swept away – they are easy to replace at fairly low costs.

On firm land the roads are narrow gravel dams just wide enough that cars and lorries can pass each other. There is not a single meter of firm and even ground at the sides of the road, places to park are extremely rare (if there is one, usually signed as picnic place, slow down and prepare to use it as they are often situated at locations with fantastic views).

So, the enthusiastic tourist finds himself driving through areas with often outstanding beauty and despairs about not being able to stop and take a look. This also plagued me a lot when driving through the spectacular east fjords. But as it was very late already I was the only one at the road and could slow down and even stop on the road for a second to take at least a quick photo.
