From Egilstadir I stayed on the ring road to avoid the long distance that the coastal road covers along the deep fjords. From my previous observations I knew I had to get to the coast south of Breiodalsvik. From Egilstadir the road runs for quite a while pretty straight through a lush valley. The sun was still shining and it was still pretty warm. But at the upper end of the valley a weird looking cloud was hanging above what seemed to be the summit.

The road was now becoming a gravel road and became narrow and windier. Soon I reached the cloud and suddenly the sight went down to just about 30 metres. The gravel road became muddy, even narrower and was climbing the mountain in narrow curves. I could see almost nothing. Staying on the road at a speed of about 20 km per hour was a mission by itself. As the road was almost a single lane road now the odd oncoming vehicle posed an extra challenge. Driving Icelandic roads, even main roads can be a mission even in plain summer.

After a while I passed a small house that obviously marked the summit before the road started a steep descent. I was now pretty glad that I had put the van to inspection before the trip and had brand new brakes. The sight was still minimal and the road started to become slippery. But I survived the steep and windy part and made it into the valley on the east side of the mountain where the road became less steep and the fog less thick.
