Local people had been opposing this as they feared that the drilling might trigger another disastrous eruption and the works indeed had been extremely difficult, but up to now the power plant was working and the volcano had not answered with a revenge break out.

It was just stinking like hell and around the power plant the smell was almost unbearable. The light wasn´t very nice either so I had just a quick look and then decided to leave and come back the next day. So, I drove back to the Ring Road and left it again after a couple of hundred meters to the parking in front of the Hverarond area, which now was almost deserted with just a few other cars parked and a handful of people exploring the area.

The view from the parking already revealed that this was a special place. The barren ridge colored in a mixture of brown and red with a few yellow and white dots plus the fumes coming out at some parts of the hill flanks were already a very unusual sight. The pools of black boiling mud in the plain in front of the hills made it a bizarre scenery. And the fuming area of weird colors to the left made this an otherworldly location.
