On the way back I had to pass the Arctic Tern´s territory again but was lucky as the birds were busy attacking another couple of hikers. I nevertheless made sure to pass the bird´s kingdom as quick as possible. On the way back to the ring road I made another stop at the cliff further inland and had some food. Refreshed I climbed up the cliff and soaked in the fantastic view across the estuary, the glaciers inland and the coastline dominated by the Dyrhólaey cape, the black sand beach and the Reynisdrangar rocks at the horizon.

After this excursion I continued my journey eastwards and soon reached the Eldhraun plain. I had passed this magic landscape a few times before but still was absolutely stunned by its mysterious beauty. The moss-covered lava rocks are already stunning enough but the warm afternoon light now added some extra magic to the scenery.

Due to the once again sparse – if mostly non-existent – possibilities to park alongside the ring road, I had mainly passed this area driving but this time I found a well-situated parking right inside one of the most fantastic parts of this plain. That parking was large enough to host a coach and some information panels gave interesting insight into the geological background of this natural wonders. There was also a – very short – foot path leading into the moss-covered lava labyrinth that otherwise should not be entered due to its extreme fragility.
