I decided to have a closer look and turned left just after the bridge ended. At the waterfall there was a large parking and a visitor centre and a little bit further down the road a large campground. The parking fee was pretty high, so I decided to check into the campground. It is not recommendable to spend the night camping somewhere in the wild in this area and I had to find some official camping place anyhow. By staying here – the fee was fairly high – I would avoid paying the parking fee.

So, I checked in in a bit of a hurry as the sun would disappear soon, parked my van on the large and a bit muddy meadow underneath the cliff and immediately went for the about 500 meters walk to the waterfall.

The Seljalandsfoss is a natural wonder by continental European standards but average by Icelandic criteria. What makes it the massive tourist attraction is – besides its close vicinity to the ring road and easy access – the possibility to walk behind the fall. Despite all the tourist buses already having left it wasn´t empty at the waterfall. But the about 30 people still admiring it, there was no overcrowding spoiling the experience.
