I followed a path along the ridge bordering the lake in s slow but steady ascent until I reached a pass. Apparently, the ridge up here had been the source of most of the younger lava streams in the area. These were still rugged, and the moss had just begun to cover the pitch black lava. One large stream was running down to the lake and formed a strange looking peninsula.
Another lava stream had been running down the north-eastern flank and into a vide valley with a meandering river in between vast wetland. The eastern flank of the valley was built by a cragged mountain range. It was a wild landscape, vast and archaic and somewhat intimidating, but absolutely stunning.
My little hike up here been coincidental as I just had stopped my van for a quick look and hadn´t dressed properly for a longer excursion in this cool to cold weather. The stiff wind blowing across the ridge didn´t help either and I was getting cold. So, I had to break free from the spell of the hypnotic landscape and walk back down to the van. The Stútur area was supposed to be just a sidekick to the Landmannalaugar area anyway and I was eager to get there now.
More visual impressions from the Stútur area in this gallery.
will be continued. Meanwhile return to the Iceland chapters.
